Sant Pere de Camprodon is an old monastery in Spain.

Sant Pere de Camprodon is a special old building in Camprodon, a town in Catalonia, Spain. It used to be a Benedictine monastery, which is a place where monks live and pray. This monastery was so important that in 1931, it was named a "Bien de Interés Cultural," meaning it's a very important cultural landmark.

A Look at History

Most of the old monastery was in ruins by 1932. Because it was so damaged, the parts that were falling apart had to be taken down. Luckily, the main church of the monastery was saved and is still standing today.

This monastery was built around the middle of the 1100s. It has a simple design, with the main decorations found on its porch. The porch has columns with special tops called capitals, which are carved with designs.

The church is shaped like a Latin cross when you look at it from above. It has four square sections at the end called apses. The biggest apse is as wide as the main part of the church. The roof of the main church area is a pointed arch, held up by strong arches.

Where the "arms" of the cross meet the main body, there's a dome. Above this dome, there's a two-story bell tower. The outside of the dome is covered by an eight-sided structure called an octagonal lantern. Inside the church, you can still see parts of the tombs where some of the old leaders, called abbots, were buried. Some of the old carved capitals from the monastery's cloister (an open area surrounded by covered walkways) are now kept in a museum in Girona.
