History of Camprodon
How Camprodon Started
Camprodon began in 1118. This was when Ramon Berenguer III, a powerful leader, allowed a market to be built. The market was set up near the Sant Pere monastery. This monastery is still in the town today.
Later, in 1252, Camprodon became a "royal city." This meant it was no longer under the control of the monastery's abbot. Instead, it was directly under the king's rule.
Local Traditions and Events
The town of Camprodon celebrates a special day for Sant Patllari. This is a local saint. The church of Santa Maria de Camprodon holds what are believed to be his relics. These relics are kept in a beautiful container from the 14th century.
The Great Earthquake of 1428
In 1428, a very strong earthquake hit the area near Camprodon. This earthquake caused a lot of damage and sadly, many people lost their lives. The earthquake happened because of a system of cracks in the Earth's crust, called faults, located to the southeast of the town.
