A Latin cross is a type of cross where the top part of the vertical beam is longer than the horizontal beam. It looks like a plus sign where the top arm is longer. This shape is very important in Christianity. It is believed to be the kind of cross that Jesus Christ was crucified on.

The Latin cross started as a symbol for the Roman Catholic Church. Over time, it became a symbol for all of Christianity. If you see a Latin cross turned upside down, it is called St. Peter's Cross. This is because St. Peter was supposedly executed on an upside-down cross. If it is turned sideways, it is sometimes called St. Philip's cross for a similar reason.

Latin Cross in Church Design

Many cathedrals and churches are built in the shape of a Latin cross. This is called a Latin cross plan. If you look at these buildings from above, you can clearly see the cross shape.

In a Latin cross plan, the main part of the church is called the nave. This is where people sit during services. The nave often has aisles or small chapels along its sides. The "arms" of the cross are formed by a section called the transept. This part usually crosses the nave near the front of the church.

Most churches with a Latin cross plan also have at least one apse. This is a rounded or multi-sided area, usually at the very end of the church. It traditionally faces east. Many churches also have a narthex at the entrance. This is a lobby or porch area before you enter the main part of the church.
