William Bynum (born January 4, 1983) is an American former professional basketball player. He played college basketball for the University of Arizona and Georgia Tech. Even though he was not picked in the 2005 NBA draft, he became a successful player. In 2007, he was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the Israeli Basketball Premier League Finals.

High School Basketball Journey
Will Bynum went to Crane High School in Chicago. He played basketball there for coach Anthony Longstreet.
Junior Year Success
During his junior year (1999–2000), Will was amazing on the court. He scored about 22 points, grabbed 4 rebounds, and made 7 assists per game. He helped his team, the Cougars, win 20 games and reach the Class AA Elite Eight. He also earned honors as an all-state player.
In November 2000, Will officially decided to play college basketball for the University of Arizona.
Senior Year Achievements
In his senior year (2000–01), Will continued to shine. He averaged 27 points, 6 rebounds, and 7 assists per game. He was named all-city and the Chicago Public Player of the Year. The Chicago Tribune also picked him for their first-team all-state selection.
In 2001, Will Bynum was even featured in a documentary called "Preps:Chicago Hoops." This series followed five Chicago high school basketball stars as they prepared for college or the NBA.
College Basketball Career
Will Bynum started his college basketball career at the University of Arizona.
Time at Arizona
In his first year at Arizona (2001–02), Will averaged 6.4 points, 1.5 rebounds, and 1.4 assists. He scored double-digits in nine games that season. In the summer of 2002, he played well during Arizona's tour of Australia. He averaged 12.8 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 2.0 assists. He played in six games before returning home to be with his mother, Rose, who was in the hospital.
In his second year, Will played only eight games for Arizona. He decided to leave the team in January 2003. He then joined Georgia Tech a week later. He wanted to be closer to home so his mother could see him play more often. For the rest of that season, he practiced with Georgia Tech.
Playing for Georgia Tech
Will became eligible to play for Georgia Tech in late 2003. In the 2003–04 season, he played 30 games. He averaged 9.6 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game. Georgia Tech had a fantastic season, finishing as the National Runner-Up. In a big game against Oklahoma State, Will scored with just 1.5 seconds left. This basket sent the Yellow Jackets to the championship game!
As a senior in 2004–05, Will was named to the ACC All-Tournament first team. He averaged 20.7 points in three tournament games. He also set a Georgia Tech ACC Tournament record by scoring 35 points in a semi-final win against North Carolina. That season, he played 32 games, averaging 12.5 points, 2.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 1.0 steals per game.
Professional Basketball Journey
After college, Will Bynum began his professional basketball career.
Starting in the NBA D-League
Will was not chosen in the 2005 NBA draft. However, he joined the Boston Celtics for the 2005 NBA Summer League. He later signed with the Celtics but was waived before the season started. On November 3, 2005, he was picked by the Roanoke Dazzle in the NBA D-League draft.
On March 17, 2006, Will signed a short contract with the Golden State Warriors. He was named the 2006 NBA D-League Rookie of the Year. He then signed with the Warriors for the rest of the 2005–06 season. After playing for the Warriors' Summer League team, he was waived in July 2006.
Playing in Israel
On September 6, 2006, Will signed with Maccabi Tel Aviv in Israel. He helped Maccabi win the 2007 Israeli Basketball Premier League championship. He was even named the 2007 Israeli Basketball Premier League Finals MVP. In 21 EuroLeague games, he averaged 11.0 points, 2.5 rebounds, 2.6 assists, and 1.3 steals.
Will played for Maccabi again in the 2007–08 season. He helped them reach the Israeli Cup final and the EuroLeague Final. In 24 EuroLeague games, he averaged 10.6 points, 1.9 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 1.2 steals.
An Incident in Tel Aviv
In January 2008, an incident occurred outside a Tel Aviv nightclub. Will Bynum was questioned by police. After an investigation, it was found that Will's actions were justified. The case was closed, and no charges were filed against him.
Time with the Detroit Pistons

Will joined the Detroit Pistons for the 2008 NBA Summer League. On July 30, 2008, he signed with the Pistons. On April 5, 2009, he scored a team-record 26 points in the fourth quarter. This helped Detroit win 104–97 against the Charlotte Bobcats. He finished that game with 32 points.
On March 12, 2010, Will made a career-high 20 assists in a win against the Washington Wizards. This was the first time a Pistons player had 20 or more assists since Isiah Thomas in 1985.
Will re-signed with the Pistons in July 2010 and again in July 2013. On October 17, 2014, he was traded to the Boston Celtics. Ten days later, the Celtics waived him.
Playing in China
On December 5, 2014, Will signed with the Guangdong Southern Tigers in the Chinese Basketball Association. He played 30 games for Guangdong, averaging 22.3 points, 7.1 assists, 3.6 rebounds, and 1.5 steals.
Return to the NBA with Washington Wizards
On March 27, 2015, Will signed a 10-day contract with the Washington Wizards. He then signed with the Wizards for the rest of the season.
Second Time in China
In August 2015, Will re-signed with the Guangdong Southern Tigers. In 29 games, he averaged 17.8 points, 4.3 rebounds, 6.5 assists, and 2.3 steals.
Playing for Windy City Bulls
On September 20, 2016, Will signed with the Atlanta Hawks. He was waived in October. On December 23, he joined the Windy City Bulls. On December 31, he played his first game for Windy City. He scored 20 points, had two rebounds, 10 assists, and two steals.
Playing in Turkey
On January 20, 2018, Will Bynum signed with the Turkish club Yeşilgiresun Belediye. He retired from professional basketball in 2018.
Personal Life
Will Bynum is the son of William and Rose Robinson. He has eight brothers and sisters. His father, who worked with steel, passed away in 2007. His mother has diabetes. Will and his wife have two daughters. Their names are Laila Rose (born in 2007) and Aliya Gloria (born in 2012).
