William John (born October 6, 1878 – died August 27, 1955) was an important Welsh politician. He was part of the Labour Party and served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for thirty years. An MP is like a representative who speaks for the people in a certain area of the country.

Becoming a Member of Parliament

William John became an MP in 1920. He was elected for an area in Wales called Rhondda West. This area was known as a "safe Labour constituency," meaning most people there usually voted for the Labour Party. He continued to represent the people of Rhondda West in the House of Commons until he retired in 1950.

Helping the Government During Wartime

From 1942 to 1945, William John had important jobs in the government. He was the Labour Party's Deputy Chief Whip. A whip helps make sure all members of their party vote together on important issues.

He also worked in Winston Churchill's special wartime government. From 1942 to 1944, he was the Comptroller of the Household. This role involved managing parts of the Royal Household's finances. Then, from 1944 to 1945, he served as a Lord of the Treasury, which meant he helped manage the country's money.
