William Bedster was an English cricketer who lived a long time ago, from 1734 to 1805. He played cricket in the late 1700s.

William Bedster was born in 1734. His hometown was Walberton, which is near Chichester in Sussex, England.

Starting First-Class Cricket

He started playing a special kind of cricket called first-class cricket in 1777. His first big match was for an England team against a Hampshire XI.

Playing for Different Teams

William Bedster played cricket until 1794. During his career, he played in 59 matches that are considered first-class. He scored 1,335 runs and also took at least 26 wickets. He played for many different teams, but he played most often for England and Middlesex teams.

Working as a Butler

For five years, he worked as a butler for Charles Bennet, 4th Earl of Tankerville. This was at the Earl's home, Mount Felix estate, in Walton-on-Thames. While he was a butler, he also played for Chertsey Cricket Club.

Becoming an Innkeeper

After he stopped playing cricket, William Bedster moved to Chelsea in London. There, he became an innkeeper, which means he ran an inn or a pub.

His Legacy

William Bedster passed away in 1805. Today, there is a road named after him in Molesey, Surrey, which shows he was a memorable person in his time.
