Who Was William Bonville?

William Bonville was born in Chewton Mendip, a place in Somerset, England. His parents were William Bonville and Elizabeth Harington.

In 1458, William became the 6th Baron Harington of Aldingham. He inherited this important title from his grandfather. His mother, Elizabeth, had passed away before her own father, so the title went directly to William.

His Family and Marriage

In the same year he became Baron Harington, William married Lady Katherine Neville. Katherine was the younger sister of a very famous military leader named Richard Neville, 16th Earl of Warwick. He was often called Warwick the Kingmaker because he was so powerful.

William and Katherine had one child together, a daughter named Cecily Bonville.

William's Role in the Wars of the Roses

The Bonville family was very loyal to the House of York. This was one of the two main families fighting for control of England during the Wars of the Roses.

William Bonville, the 6th Baron Harington, was among many Yorkist supporters who fought in the Battle of Wakefield. This battle happened on December 30, 1460. Sadly, William died during this battle.

After William's death, his wife Katherine married again. Her second husband was William Hastings, 1st Baron Hastings, who was also a nobleman loyal to the Yorkist side. Katherine and William Hastings had six more children.

Because William Bonville died, his young daughter Cecily became the next Baroness. She inherited her father's title and became the 7th Baroness Harington of Aldingham in her own right.
