William Brownlow was an important politician from Lurgan, County Armagh, in Ireland. He was born on September 1, 1755, and passed away on July 10, 1815. He belonged to a political group called the Tories.

William Brownlow's Early Life and Family

William Brownlow was the oldest son of William Brownlow and Judith Letitia Meredith. His family was very well-known and owned a lot of land in Armagh. William inherited much of this land, making him quite wealthy.

His Political Journey

William Brownlow had a long career in politics.

  • In 1787, he became the High Sheriff of Armagh. This was an important local role, like a chief officer for the county.
  • After his father passed away, William became a Member of Parliament (MP) for County Armagh. He served in the Irish House of Commons from 1795 to 1797. The Irish House of Commons was like a parliament for Ireland at that time.
  • Later, in 1807, he was chosen to be an MP for Armagh again. This time, he served in the United Kingdom House of Commons. This was the main parliament for the whole United Kingdom. He held this position until he died in 1815.

Starting a Bank

Besides his political work, William Brownlow also helped start a business. He teamed up with three other people to create a private bank. It was called "William Brownlow Esq., & Co."

Family Life and Legacy

In 1803, William Brownlow married Charity Ford. She was the daughter of Matthew Ford from Seaford. William and Charity did not have any children. When William passed away in 1815, his brother Charles took over the family's affairs. Charles was the father of Charles Brownlow, 1st Baron Lurgan, who later became a very important person himself.
