William Carnegie, 8th Earl of Northesk facts for kids
William Hopetoun Carnegie, 8th Earl of Northesk (born 16 October 1794 – died 5 December 1878) was an important Scottish nobleman. He held the title of the 8th Earl of Northesk. William was born to William Carnegie, the 7th Earl of Northesk, and Mary Ricketts. He lived to be 84 years old.
Life and Family
William Hopetoun Carnegie was born in 1794. He was part of a noble family in Scotland. He married Georgiana Maria Elliot on 14 February 1843. Georgiana was the daughter of Admiral Sir George Elliot.
William and Georgiana had two children:
- Margaret Mary Adeliza Carnegie (died 27 September 1871)
- Lt.-Col. George John Carnegie, 9th Earl of Northesk (born 1 December 1843 – died 9 September 1891)
Role in Jamaica
William Hopetoun Carnegie was involved in the plantation system in the British colony of Jamaica. Plantations were large farms where crops like sugar were grown. At that time, many plantations used forced labor.
When the British government ended this system in 1833, people who owned plantations received payments. William Carnegie received a payment of £3,529. This amount would be worth much more today.
Earl of Northesk
William became the 8th Earl of Northesk in 1831. He held this title until 1871. After his death in 1878, his son, George John Carnegie, became the 9th Earl of Northesk.
