William Cawley was an English lawyer and politician who lived a long time ago. He was born around the year 1628. He was a member of the House of Commons, which is like a part of the government, in 1659 and 1660.

William Cawley's Life

William Cawley was the oldest son of William Cawley and his first wife, Catherine Walrond. His mother's family was from a place called Isle Brewers in Somerset.

Early Life and Education

William Cawley started studying law at a famous place called Inner Temple in 1645. He finished his law studies and became a lawyer in 1652.

His Political Journey

From 1652 to July 1660, William Cawley worked as a Justice of the Peace for Sussex. This job meant he helped keep law and order in the area. He also helped with taxes as a commissioner for assessment in 1652 and again in 1657.

In 1659, he helped organize the local military as a commissioner for militia. That same year, William Cawley was chosen to be a Member of Parliament for Chichester. He served in a government group called the Third Protectorate Parliament.

In January 1660, he again helped with taxes. In April 1660, he was chosen to be a Member of Parliament for Chichester once more, this time for the Convention Parliament. However, his election was later cancelled on May 21.

Family Life

By 1655, William Cawley married a woman named Elizabeth. Her father was a Cavalier, a supporter of the King, who had lost his property during those times.

Later Years

William Cawley's father passed away in 1667 while living in another country. William Cawley then took over his father's property. However, by the year 1700, William Cawley had become very poor. He even received a small amount of money, £5, from the Inner Temple to help him.
