William Coddington Jr. was an important leader in early Rhode Island. He served as the governor of the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. He was governor for two terms, from 1683 to 1685.
Early Life and Family
William Coddington Jr. was born on January 18, 1651. He grew up in Newport, Rhode Island. His father, also named William Coddington, was a very important leader. His father served many times as governor of the towns of Portsmouth and Newport. Later, his father became governor of all the united towns in the colony.
William Jr. was one of 13 children. He was the first child of his father's third wife, Anne Brinley. Her parents were Thomas and Anna Brinley.
Political Career
William Coddington Jr. became a "freeman" in Newport in 1675. This meant he had the right to vote and hold public office. He was 24 years old at the time.
He started his political journey in 1679. He was chosen as a "deputy" for the colony for one year. A deputy was like a representative. The next two years, he served as an "assistant." An assistant helped the governor.
In 1683, he was chosen to be the governor of the colony. He served in this important role for two years.
Later Life
William Coddington Jr. never got married. He passed away at the age of 38. He was buried in the Coddington Cemetery in Newport.
