William Coffee (1917-1989) was a very important person in American history. He received a special award called the Commendation for Meritorious Civilian Service in April 1946. This was because he played a key role in finding and leading a group of African-American code-breakers for the United States Army. These code-breakers worked in a secret unit called the Signals Intelligence Service.

William Coffee's Early Career

William Coffee started his public service career with the Civilian Conservation Corps. He worked there from 1937 to 1940. This program helped young men find jobs during a tough time.

Soon after, he began working for the Signal Intelligence Service. This group was later known as the Signal Security Agency. When he first joined, he was hired as a janitor. But William Coffee was a talented and dedicated person. He quickly earned a promotion to a messenger position.

A Special Mission

After his promotion, William Coffee was given a very important task. He was asked to hire a group of African-American cryptologists. Cryptologists are people who work with secret codes. They break enemy codes and create new ones to protect important messages. This team would work at a place called Arlington Hall Station.

William Coffee did an amazing job with this mission. He successfully put together and led this group of black cryptologists. His success was a huge step forward. It helped black cryptologists reach a level of importance they hadn't achieved before.

After World War II

After World War II ended, William Coffee continued his important work. He joined the Armed Forces Security Agency. This agency later became the National Security Agency (NSA). The NSA is a top-secret government agency that protects U.S. information and collects foreign intelligence.

William Coffee worked for the NSA for many years. He retired from the agency in 1972.

Honoring a Hero

William Coffee's contributions were recognized long after his retirement. In 2011, he was honored by being inducted into the National Security Agency's Cryptologic Hall of Honor. This special hall recognizes people who have made huge contributions to the field of code-breaking and national security. It shows how important his work was for the country.
