William Curry (MP) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

William Curry (also spelled Corry) was an important Irish politician and lawyer who lived from 1784 to 1843. He was a member of the British Parliament and held a special legal job called Serjeant-at-law in Ireland.

Early Life and Family

William Curry was born in 1784 in a place called Aughnacloy, County Tyrone, in Ireland. He was the only son of William Curry senior and Anne Dobbin. His mother's brother, Leonard Dobbin, was a Member of Parliament (MP) for Armagh City for many years.

Becoming a Lawyer and Politician

In 1806, William Curry became a barrister, which is a type of lawyer who can argue cases in higher courts. Later, in 1837, his uncle Leonard Dobbin decided to retire from Parliament. William Curry then successfully ran for his uncle's old seat, representing Armagh City. This meant he became a Member of Parliament himself.

The next year, in 1838, he was given the important legal role of Third Serjeant-at-law. This was a high-ranking position for a lawyer in Ireland.

Later Career and Legacy

In 1840, William Curry left his job as a Member of Parliament and also resigned from being a Serjeant-at-law. This was because he was appointed as a Master in the Court of Chancery (Ireland). The Court of Chancery dealt with special legal cases, often about fairness and property.

William Curry passed away in September 1843. He died at his nephew's house in Delgany, which is in County Wicklow. He was married to a woman named Miss Bruce, but they did not have any children. The Gentleman's Magazine, a well-known publication at the time, wrote a tribute to him. They praised him for being highly respected by other lawyers and the public. They admired both his professional skills and his personal qualities.
