William Darnell "Bill" Euille, born in 1950, is an American politician. He served as the mayor of Alexandria, Virginia, from 2003 to 2016. He made history as the first African-American person to hold that position in the city. He also helped guide the public transportation system in the Washington D.C. area. Later, he joined the Virginia ABC board in 2020.

Early Life and Education

Bill Euille grew up in Alexandria, Virginia. He went to T.C. Williams High School and graduated in 1968. After high school, he studied accounting at Quinnipiac University in Connecticut. He earned his bachelor's degree in 1972.

Public Service Career

Euille began his career in public service in Alexandria. He was a member of the Alexandria School Board from 1974 to 1984. This board helps make decisions about the city's schools.

City Council and Mayor

Later, he served on the Alexandria City Council from 1994 to 2003. The City Council helps run the city and makes local laws. In 2003, he was elected mayor of Alexandria. He was the first African-American mayor in the city's history. He was re-elected several times and served as mayor until 2016.

As mayor, Euille worked on important issues for the city. He also served on boards for transportation in Northern Virginia. These groups help plan and manage public transport like buses and trains.

Later Appointments

After his time as mayor, Euille continued to serve the state. In 2019, the Governor of Virginia appointed him to a state board. He started a five-year term on the Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control Authority's board in 2020.

Community Involvement

Bill Euille has always been very active in his community. He started the William D. Euille Foundation in 1994. This foundation helps support different causes.

He has also been involved with many other groups, including:
