The William Fitzgerald Block is an old building in Burlington, Vermont. It's special because it was built around 1887. This building was used for both shops and homes. It shows us what neighborhood stores and apartments looked like a long time ago. In 2012, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's an important historical place.

The William Fitzgerald Block is located in Burlington's Old North End. It stands at the corner of North Champlain Street and Sherman Street. This street is a main road through the neighborhood.
What Does the Building Look Like?
This building has two stories. It is made of wood and has a flat roof. The outside walls are covered with clapboard siding. It has a style called Italianate.
You can see this style in its fancy details. There's a decorative trim under the roof. This trim has special paired brackets. There's also a simpler trim above the shops on the first floor. The windows on the second floor have peaked sills.
The front of the building has six sections, called bays. Four of these sections on the south side are for shops. There are four doors in total. One door goes into a shop. Two other doors lead to the apartments upstairs. The last door leads to an apartment on the ground floor. This apartment used to be part of the shop space.
Who Lived and Worked Here?
William and Mary Fitzgerald built this block around 1887. They ran a neighborhood store here. They also lived in the apartment at the north end of the building.
At that time, many workers moved to Burlington. They came to work in the wood products factories. The area around the building became home to many Irish immigrants. The store changed owners and sizes over the years. Sometimes, it only took up the corner part of the building.
