William FitzWilliam, 3rd Earl FitzWilliam (born January 15, 1720 – died August 10, 1756) was an important British nobleman and politician. He held special titles like "Earl" and helped make laws for his country.

Who Was William FitzWilliam?

William FitzWilliam was born into a very important family. His father was John Fitzwilliam, 2nd Earl Fitzwilliam. His mother was Anne Stringer. William also had a sister named Anne.

When his father passed away in 1728, William became the 3rd Earl Fitzwilliam. This was a title in the Peerage of Ireland, which means it was a special noble rank in Ireland.

Becoming a Politician

William FitzWilliam became a Member of Parliament (MP) in 1741. He represented the area of Peterborough. An MP is like a representative who helps make laws for the country.

In 1742, he received another special title: Baron Fitzwilliam. This was a title in the Peerage of Great Britain. This meant he was also a nobleman in Great Britain.

Later, in 1746, he was given an even higher title: Earl Fitzwilliam in the Peerage of Great Britain. This showed how important he was in British society.

Family Life

In 1744, William FitzWilliam married Lady Anne Watson-Wentworth. Her father was the Earl of Malton, who later became the Marquess of Rockingham. Lady Anne's brother, Charles Watson-Wentworth, later became the Prime Minister of Great Britain.

William and Lady Anne had eight children together. They had two sons and six daughters:

  • Lady Anne (born 1745 – died 1819)
  • Lady Charlotte (born 1746 – died 1833): She married Thomas Dundas, 1st Baron Dundas.
  • William Fitzwilliam, 4th Earl Fitzwilliam (born 1748 – died 1833): He became the next Earl after his father.
  • Lady Frances Henrietta (born 1750 – died 1835)
  • Lady Amelia Maria (born 1751 – died 1752)
  • Lady Henrietta (born 1753)
  • Lady Dorothy (born 1754 – died 1809)
