The William Fogg Library is a public library in Eliot, Maine. It's a special building built in 1907. Dr. John S. H. Fogg had it built to honor his father, William Fogg. A famous architect named C. Howard Walker designed it. This unique library was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.

About the Library Building

The William Fogg Library stands out in Eliot. It's built from fieldstone, which are natural stones found in fields. The roof is unique, shaped like a pyramid with a gentle curve. This design makes the library look very special.

Outside the Library

The library sits on a small hill. This high spot makes it easy to see from the main road. The front of the building has a grand entrance. It has four tall columns that support a fancy archway. The roof also has three small windows that stick out, called dormers.

Inside the Library

When you go inside, there's a main hallway. On one side, you'll find a reading room. On the other side is a special room just for kids. The books are kept in a section at the back. The inside of the library still looks much like it did when it was first built.

A Gift to the Town

The idea for a library in Eliot started with William Fogg. He had a private collection of books at his home. He would lend them out to people. His son, Dr. John H. S. Fogg, loved books too. He went to Harvard University and became a doctor.

How the Library Was Built

When Dr. John H. S. Fogg passed away, he gave most of his books to the town. He also left $10,000 to build a new library. He even donated the land for it. The library was finished in 1907.

The stones used to build the library are thought to have come from the walls around the Fogg family's property. Dr. Fogg also set up a special fund. This money helps take care of the library building for many years to come.
