William Herbert (1621–1646) was a young English politician. He was a member of the House of Commons, which is like one of the main parts of the UK Parliament today. He served from 1640 to 1644. William Herbert: A Young Politician

William Herbert was born in 1621. He grew up in a time when England was facing many changes and disagreements. He was the fifth son of Philip Herbert, 4th Earl of Pembroke, a very important noble. His mother was Susan de Vere. Her father was the 17th Earl of Oxford.

Early Life and Education

William went to Exeter College, Oxford, a famous university. He started there on January 29, 1635, when he was just 13 years old. He earned his Master of Arts (MA) degree on August 31, 1636. His family lived in Wilton, a town in Wiltshire, England.

Joining Parliament

In November 1640, William Herbert was elected to the House of Commons. This was part of a special Parliament called the Long Parliament. He was chosen to represent two areas: Monmouthshire and Woodstock. He decided to represent Monmouthshire. Being a Member of Parliament meant he helped make laws and decisions for the country.

The English Civil War

During this time, England was heading towards a big conflict. This was the English Civil War. It was a fight between those who supported King Charles I and those who supported Parliament. William Herbert strongly supported the King. People who supported the King were called Royalists. Because of his support for the King, William was removed from his position in Parliament on February 5, 1644. This meant he could no longer be a Member of Parliament.

Later Life and Legacy

William Herbert died in 1646. He was only 25 years old and had not married. Even though his life was short, he played a part in the important political events of his time.
