William Hervey, 1st Baron Hervey (born around 1565 – died July 1642), was an important English soldier and politician. He was a member of the House of Commons, which is like a part of today's Parliament, from 1601 to 1611.

Who Was William Hervey?
William Hervey was the son of Henry Hervey and Jane Thomas. His grandfather was Sir Nicholas Hervey. William Hervey became a soldier and served his country in important ways.
Early Life and Military Service
William Hervey was born around 1565. He joined the fight against the Spanish Armada, a famous fleet of ships from Spain. For his bravery, he was made a knight by the Earl of Essex in 1596. This happened in a place called Cadiz. After that, he also served as a soldier in Ireland.

William Hervey was involved in English politics. He was chosen to represent people in the House of Commons.
Serving in Parliament
In 1601, William Hervey was elected as a Member of Parliament for Horsham. Later, in 1604, he was elected to represent Petersfield. This shows he was a trusted leader in his time.
Becoming a Nobleman
William Hervey received several special titles during his life.
- In 1619, he was made a baronet of St Martin-in-the-Fields. This was a new kind of noble title.
- In 1620, he became the Baron Hervey of Rosse in Ireland.
- In 1628, he was made the Baron Hervey of Kidbrooke in Kent, England.
These titles meant he was a very important person in society. All his special honors ended when he passed away in 1642.

Connection to Shakespeare
Some people think William Hervey might be connected to the famous writer William Shakespeare. He was the stepfather to the Earl of Southampton. The Earl of Southampton is thought by some to be "Mr W. H." in Shakespeare's famous sonnets. Some also believe William Hervey might have helped get these sonnets published.
