William Lisle (born 1632 – died 12 July 1716) was an English lawyer, a person who owned land, and a politician. He was a member of the House of Commons, which is like a main part of the government, from 1659 to 1681.

William Lisle was the oldest son of Tobias Lisle. His father was a grocer, which means he sold food and household items, in London. William's mother was Susan Trist.

Early Life and Education

William Lisle started his studies at Middle Temple in 1650. Middle Temple was a place where people trained to become lawyers. In 1651, he went to Magdalen College, Oxford, which is a famous university.

He finished his law studies and became a lawyer in 1659. In the same year, he also inherited land and property from his father.

Political Career and Public Service

William Lisle became a Member of Parliament (MP) for Brackley in 1659. An MP is a person elected to represent an area in the government. He served in a government group called the Third Protectorate Parliament.

He was chosen again as an MP for Brackley in 1660 for the Convention Parliament. This shows he was a trusted leader in his community.

Roles in the Military

William Lisle also had roles in the military. In 1662, he was a lieutenant in the volunteer cavalry for Northamptonshire. Cavalry means soldiers who fight on horseback. By 1663, he became a captain in the local militia. A militia was a group of citizens trained as soldiers, ready to defend their area. Later, from 1673, he was a colonel in the militia.

Other Public Duties

In 1665, William Lisle inherited more land from his uncle, also named William Lisle, in a place called Evenley. That same year, he took on other important jobs. He became a Master in Chancery, which was a legal role helping with court cases. He also worked as a commissioner for assessment in Northamptonshire until 1680. This role likely involved helping to collect taxes or manage local finances.

He was elected as an MP for Brackley two more times, in 1679 and again in 1681. After a break, he returned to public service as a commissioner for assessment from 1689 to 1690. He also became a Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Northamptonshire in 1689. A Justice of the Peace helps keep law and order in a local area. He held this important role until he passed away.

Family Life

William Lisle married Elizabeth Aylworth on 9 November 1661. They had a large family together, with five sons and five daughters.

Later Years

William Lisle lived a long life, passing away at the age of 84. He was buried in Evenley, the place where he had inherited land from his uncle.
