William Livingstone, 6th Lord Livingston facts for kids
William Livingstone, the 6th Lord Livingston, was an important Scottish nobleman who lived in the 1500s. He was known for his loyalty to Mary, Queen of Scots, and played a part in the history of Scotland during her reign.
Early Life and Family
William Livingstone was the son of Alexander Livingston, 5th Lord Livingston. His mother was Lady Agnes Douglas. William's father, Alexander, had a very important job: he was the guardian of Mary, Queen of Scots, when she was a child. This meant he helped look after the young queen.
William had an older brother named John. Sadly, John died in a battle in 1547. Because of this, William became the Lord Livingston in 1550.
Life and Loyalty to the Queen
William Livingstone was a Protestant, which was a significant religious group in Scotland at the time. His sister, Mary Livingston, was also famous. She was one of the "four Marys", who were special attendants to Mary, Queen of Scots.
William was very loyal to Queen Mary. He even fought for her in the battle of Langside in 1568. This battle was a key moment in Queen Mary's life in Scotland.
His wife, Agnes Fleming, also served Queen Mary. She joined the Queen in England in 1568. Agnes traveled with the Queen and was highly valued by her. For example, Francis Knollys, a person who observed the Queen, said that Mary "did esteem (her) most dearly." Agnes Fleming, Queen Mary, and Bess of Hardwick even worked on embroidery together while the Queen was held at Tutbury Castle. Agnes had her own servants, Nicol Fisher and Christian Graham, who helped her.
Family and Children
William Livingstone married Agnes Fleming. She was the daughter of Lady Janet Stewart and Malcolm Fleming, 3rd Lord Fleming. Interestingly, Agnes's sister, Janet Fleming, had married William's brother, John, who passed away earlier.
William and Agnes had several children:
- Alexander Livingstone, 1st Earl of Linlithgow (who later became an Earl)
- George Livingstone of Ogleface
- William Livingstone of Westquarter
- Jean Livingstone, who married Alexander Elphinstone, 4th Lord Elphinstone
- Margaret Livingstone, who married two different noblemen
