William Louis (born January 7, 1647 – died June 23, 1677) was a ruler known as the Duke of Württemberg. He led the Duchy from 1674 until he passed away in 1677. He was an important figure in the history of Württemberg, a region in what is now Germany.
William Louis was born in Stuttgart. He was the ninth child of Eberhard III, Duke of Württemberg, and his first wife, Anna Katharina of Kyrburg.
Becoming Duke of Württemberg
William Louis became Duke of Württemberg in 1674. He ruled for a short time, only three years. Sadly, he died suddenly in 1677 at the age of 30. He passed away at Hirsau Castle.
After his death, his wife, Magdalena Sibylla of Hesse-Darmstadt, became the ruler for their young son. She was called a 'regent' and governed Württemberg from 1677 to 1693. She ruled until their son was old enough to take over.
William Louis's Family
William Louis married Magdalena Sibylla of Hesse-Darmstadt on November 6, 1673, in Darmstadt. Together, they had four children.
- Eleonore Dorothea (born August 14, 1674 – died May 26, 1683).
- Eberhardine Luise (born October 11, 1675 – died March 26, 1707).
- Eberhard Ludwig (born September 19, 1676 – died October 31, 1733). He became the next Duke of Württemberg after his mother's regency.
- Magdalena Wilhelmine (born November 7, 1677 – died October 30, 1742). She later married Charles III William, Margrave of Baden-Durlach.
