The William Moats Farm is a special place near Ashton, Illinois, in the United States. It's so important that it's listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This farm is the only building in its area of Ogle County, Illinois that has this special recognition!

What is an I-House?

The main house at the William Moats Farm is built in a style called an I-house. This type of house was very popular in the 1800s. It usually has two stories and is shaped like a rectangle. The front of the house is often symmetrical, meaning both sides look the same.

This particular I-house was built around 1844. An architect named Stoddard designed it. The house sits on a strong stone foundation. It's mostly made of stone, but also uses weatherboard (wooden boards) and brick in its construction.

Farm Buildings and History

The William Moats Farm isn't just one house. When it was added to the National Register of Historic Places, it included the main house and three other important buildings. These buildings help tell the story of the farm.

  • A smokehouse was built at the same time as the main house, in 1844. Smokehouses were used to preserve meat by smoking it.
  • A large barn with a gable roof (a roof that slopes down on two sides) was built in 1900. It's covered in weatherboard, just like parts of the house.
  • A windmill was added in 1930. Windmills were important for pumping water or grinding grain on farms.

Why is This Farm Special?

The William Moats Farm was added to the National Register of Historic Places on February 12, 1987. It was recognized for two main reasons: its importance in agriculture (farming) and its architecture (the way its buildings were designed and built). It shows us what farms and homes looked like in the past.
