Sir William Morgan's Life
William Morgan was the oldest son of Thomas Morgan, who was also a Member of Parliament. William became a knight on July 23, 1603. This is why he was called "Sir William Morgan."
In 1612, he became the Sheriff of Monmouthshire. The Sheriff was like the main law enforcement officer for the area. In 1624, people chose him to be a Member of Parliament for Monmouthshire. He was chosen again in 1625.
Role in the English Civil War
When the English Civil War began, Sir William Morgan helped King Charles I. He was a "Commissioner of Array" for the King. This meant he helped gather soldiers and supplies for the King's army. He also became the Governor of Newport. This made him in charge of the town of Newport.
King Charles I visited Sir William at his home, Tredegar, on July 16 and 17, 1645. After the war, in 1649, some people looked into his actions because he had supported the King. Sir William Morgan passed away in 1655.
