William Palmes facts for kids
William Palmes (born around 1638, died 1718) was an important English politician. He owned land in Lindley, North Yorkshire and Ashwell, Rutland. He was a member of the English Parliament and later the British Parliament from 1668 to 1713.
Early Life and Family Background
William Palmes was the second son of Sir Brian Palmes and his wife, Mary Tevery. He studied at Wadham College, Oxford from 1655 to 1659. In 1657, he inherited the family's estates after his brother passed away. On July 15, 1663, William married Mary Eure. She was the younger daughter of William Eure, the 6th Baron Eure.
William Palmes's Political Journey
William Palmes began his public service as the High Sheriff of Rutland in 1662. This was an important local role. He was first elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Malton in 1668. An MP is someone elected to represent people in Parliament, helping to make laws.
He continued to be the MP for Malton until 1681. William Palmes was elected again for Malton in 1689. He kept this important position until the election in 1713.
Later Life and Family Legacy
Towards the end of his life, William Palmes faced some money problems. Because of this, he sold his estate in Malton in 1713. He passed away in 1718 and was buried at St Martin, Ludgate on February 5, 1716.
William and his wife, Mary, had eight children: four sons and four daughters. However, only one daughter, Elizabeth, lived longer than her parents. Elizabeth later married Sir William Strickland, 3rd Baronet.
