William Quatremaine (born around 1618 – died June 11, 1667) was an English doctor and a politician. He was a physician to King Charles II when the King was living outside England. Later, William Quatremaine became a member of the House of Commons, which is like a part of the government, from 1662 until he passed away in 1667.

Who Was William Quatremaine?

William Quatremaine was born around 1618. He was a very smart person who became both a doctor and a politician. He lived during a time when England had a king, and he even helped the king when he was in exile.

Early Life and Education

William Quatremaine studied at Pembroke College, Oxford, which is a famous university in England. On June 23, 1657, he earned his degree as a Doctor of Physic. This means he became a qualified doctor.

Helping the King

In early 1658, William Quatremaine played an important role in helping the Marquis of Ormonde. The Marquis had made a secret trip to England to help King Charles II. William Quatremaine helped the Marquis return safely to France.

Because of his help, the Marquis of Ormonde spoke very highly of Quatremaine to Sir Edward Hyde, who was an important person close to the King. As a result, William Quatremaine traveled to Flanders (a region in Europe) to become the personal doctor for King Charles II. This was a big responsibility!

Life After the King's Return

After King Charles II returned to England and became king again (this event is called the Restoration), William Quatremaine started his own medical practice in a town called Lewes. He had married into a family from Sussex, a county in England.

In 1661, William Quatremaine was chosen to be a member of the Royal Society. The Royal Society is a very old and respected group of scientists and thinkers. Being elected to it showed that he was considered a very intelligent and important person in his field.

Becoming a Member of Parliament

In 1662, William Quatremaine was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for a place called New Shoreham. This meant he became a representative for the people of New Shoreham in the House of Commons. He held this position, helping to make laws and decisions for the country, until he died in 1667.
