William Rant (born around 1604 in Norwich, died September 15, 1653, in Norfolk) was an English doctor. He was known for giving a special lecture called the Gulstonian Lecture in 1639.

His Family Life

William Rant Jr. was the son of William Rant Sr. His father was also a doctor who worked in Norwich. William Rant Sr. had studied at the University of Cambridge.

William Rant Jr. married a woman named Jane Dingley. Her father was Sir John Dingley. Sir John owned a large estate called Wolverton Manor during the time of Queen Elizabeth I.

William and Jane Rant had children. Their daughter married Sir Edward Ward, who was a baronet. Their son, also named William, became a knight in 1671.

Education and Medical Career

William Rant Jr. started studying at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge when he was 16 years old, in 1619. He worked hard and earned his first medical degree in 1625. He then earned his full medical doctor (M.D.) degree in 1630.

In 1634, he was chosen to be a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians. This meant he was recognized as an important and skilled doctor. In October 1639, he gave the Gulstonian Lecture. This was a special talk about diseases of different body parts.

For many years, Dr. Rant practiced medicine in London. Later, he moved to Norfolk.

William Rant Jr. was buried in Thorpe St Andrew. He left six valuable Arabic books to Gonville and Caius College, where he had studied. Both William Rant Sr. and William Rant Jr. were considered excellent doctors in their time.
