William Rutty (1687–1730) was an English doctor. He was known for his work in medicine during the 18th century.

William Rutty's Life

William Rutty was born in London in 1687. He started studying at Christ's College, Cambridge in 1707. He earned his first medical degree (M.B.) in 1712 and then his advanced medical degree (M.D.) in 1719.

Becoming a Doctor

After finishing his studies, William Rutty joined the Royal College of Physicians. He became a member in 1719 and a full fellow in 1720. This was an important step for doctors at the time.

He also gave lectures at the Barber-Surgeons' Hall. He taught about different parts of the human body. He became a lecturer on bones in 1721. Later, in 1724, he taught about internal organs, and in 1728, he lectured on muscles.

Royal Society Member

In 1720, William Rutty was chosen to be a Fellow of the Royal Society. This is a group of important scientists. He later became the second secretary of the society in 1727.

William Rutty passed away on June 10, 1730. His cousin, John Rutty, was also a well-known doctor.

William Rutty's Works

In 1722, William Rutty gave a series of important lectures called the Gulstonian lectures. He talked about the human urinary system and its diseases.

He later published these lectures as a book in 1726. The book was called A Treatise of the Urinary Passages. He dedicated his book to Sir Hans Sloane, another famous doctor and collector. This book shared his knowledge about how the urinary system works and what can go wrong with it.
