William Scarborough (born March 14, 1945) is a politician from New York. He is a member of the Democratic Party. He represented District 29 in the New York State Assembly. This district includes large parts of Queens County, like Jamaica.
William Scarborough's Early Life and Education
William Scarborough grew up in Jamaica, Queens. He also lived in St. Albans and Rosedale. He went to Public School 140 and Shimer J.H.S. 142. He also attended Andrew Jackson High School.
He continued his education after high school. In 1970, he earned an associate's degree from Queensborough Community College. Later, in 1975, he received a B.A. degree. This degree was in psychology and political science. He earned it from Queens College (City University of New York).
Starting a Career in Public Service
From 1979 to 1983, William Scarborough worked for the New York Telephone Company. He was an account executive there. His journey into politics began in 1977. He became a member of Community Board 28. He served on this board until 1983.
Before being elected to the Assembly, he held other important roles. From 1984 to 1994, he was the District Manager of Community Board 12. He also served as the Chairman of Area Policy Board 12. He held this position from 1983 to 1994. These roles helped him understand his community's needs.
Time in the New York State Assembly
William Scarborough was first elected to the New York State Assembly in 1994. He worked hard for the people in his district. He ran for re-election without opposition in 2008 and 2010.
During his time in the Assembly, he led important committees. He chaired the Assembly Committee on Children and Families. He also served on several other committees. He was the Chair of the Small Business Committee. He was a strong voice for his community. He often spoke about the flooding issues in his district. This flooding in Southeast Queens was a big problem. It happened because of changes to the water system.
William Scarborough left his position in the Assembly in May 2015. Since then, he has continued to help others. He now works for the Fortune Society. This organization helps people who have recently been released from prison. He helps them connect with social services.
