William Shand (1902–1997) was a talented writer. He was born in Scotland but later moved to Argentina. He wrote many different things, like poems, novels (long stories), and plays for the theater.

When William Shand arrived in Argentina in 1938, he started working for a newspaper called La Nación. There, he reviewed books, translated texts from one language to another, and wrote as a critic. He translated poems by famous writers like John Donne and Stephen Spender.

Shand also wrote many plays. One of his most famous works was the libretto (the words for an opera) for Beatrix Cenci. This opera was created by the composer Alberto Ginastera. William Shand also worked with Alberto Girri to collect and publish the works of other poets. People said Shand was very good at noticing what was happening in Argentine society. He often wrote about important and sometimes difficult topics. He divided his time between an apartment in Plazoleta Carlos Pellegrini and a house in San Miguel.

Awards and Honors

William Shand received several awards for his writing and translations:

  • In 1984, he received a Merit Diploma for Translation from the Konex Foundation.
  • He received another Merit Diploma for Translation from the Konex Foundation in 1994.
  • He also won the Premio Fondo Nacional del Arte (National Arts Fund Prize).
  • He was awarded the Premio Municipal (Municipal Prize).
  • He received the Faja de Honor de la S.A.D.E (Honor Sash from the Argentine Writers' Society).
