William Spence was a Scottish schoolmaster who lived in Fife. In May 1685, he was called to appear before the Privy Council. This was a powerful group that made important decisions for the country.

Spence was accused of teaching his students about Presbyterianism. This was a type of Christian faith. He was also accused of going to special meetings that were not allowed at the time. These meetings were called "conventicles."

Why William Spence Was Imprisoned

William Spence was sent to a prison on Bass Rock. This was a famous island prison. He was put there at the same time as another person named Peter Kid. Spence stayed in prison for more than a year.

Release from Prison

On July 20, 1686, William Spence asked to be set free. He said he was not feeling well. The Lords of the Council agreed to let him go. But there were some rules he had to follow.

He had to promise to appear before the Council if they called him again. He also had to promise to live peacefully. Most importantly, he was not allowed to teach at a school anymore. If he broke these rules, he would have to pay a very large fine. This fine was five thousand merks in Scots money.

William Spence was set free along with John Greg. Even after his release, he had to keep showing up before the Council. This was to make sure he followed the rules and stayed free.

There was another person named William Spence. He was a secretary to the Earl of Argyle. That William Spence was tortured with a special device called "the boot." This article is not about him.
