Sir William Staines (born 1731, died September 11, 1807) was an important builder in London. He is best known for serving as the Lord Mayor of London from 1800 to 1801. His life story is quite inspiring because he started with very little and achieved great success.

Who Was Sir William Staines?

Sir William Staines was a well-known figure in London during the late 1700s and early 1800s. He was born in 1731 and passed away in 1807. He became famous for his work as a builder. He also held several important jobs in the city government, including the top role of Lord Mayor.

From Humble Beginnings to Success

William Staines started his working life as a simple labourer, helping bricklayers. This means he did hard physical work, carrying bricks and mixing mortar. Despite this humble start, he worked incredibly hard and managed to earn a lot of money over time. He became very wealthy through his building projects.

Joining the Carpenters' Company

As he became a successful builder, William Staines joined the Worshipful Company of Carpenters. This was a very old and respected group, or "guild," for people working in carpentry and building. Becoming a "Freeman" of this company was an important step in his career. He even became the "Master" of the Carpenters' Company twice, first from 1793 to 1794, and again from 1798 to 1799. This showed how much his fellow builders respected him.

A Career in London Politics

Sir William Staines also became very involved in the government of London.

  • In 1783, he was elected as a Common Councillor for the Cripplegate area of London. This was his first step into city politics.
  • From 1791 to 1793, he served as the Deputy for Cripplegate.
  • On April 10, 1793, he was chosen as an Alderman for Cripplegate. Aldermen were important officials who helped govern the city.
  • Even though some people said he couldn't read or write very well, and that other Aldermen sometimes made fun of him, he was still chosen for very high positions. This shows his strong character and how much people trusted him.

Serving as Sheriff and Lord Mayor

In 1796, William Staines was elected as the Sheriff of London. This was a very important job, helping to keep law and order in the city. Because of this role, he was given the title of "Sir" and became a knight on October 26, 1796.

His most important role came when he was elected Lord Mayor of London for the year 1800 to 1801. This is the highest position in the City of London's government. It was a huge achievement for someone who started as a bricklayer's labourer.

Staines's Building Projects and Legacy

Sir William Staines used his skills as a builder to help others and improve London.

  • In 1786, he built nine houses in a place called Jacob's Well Passage. He built these homes specifically for his older friends who might have needed a place to live.
  • He also built the Barbican Chapel, a place of worship.
  • He rebuilt a famous public-house (like a pub or inn) called "Jacob's Well." This place was known for its plays and performances.

After he passed away, a story about his early life was published in a magazine called the European Magazine in November 1807. Today, you can see a painting of Sir William Staines by a famous artist named William Beechey. This painting hangs in the Guildhall Art Gallery in London, reminding people of his remarkable life.
