Sir William Thompson (born April 10, 1614 – died around April 1681) was an important English businessman and politician from London. He was a Member of Parliament (MP) for the City of London from 1661 to 1679. An MP is a person elected to represent a group of people in the country's parliament, which is like a big meeting where laws are made.

William Thompson was the youngest of four sons born to Robert Thompson. He went to Merchant Taylors' School when he was young. All his brothers, including Maurice and George, became very successful businessmen in London.

Early Life and Career

William Thompson was a strong supporter of the Parliament during a time of political change in England. He even served as second-in-command at the First Battle of Newbury, an important battle.

He became very well-known in the East India Company, which was a powerful trading company. He owned a lot of shares in the company and later became its Governor, which is like being the boss. He also became an Alderman in London, a senior member of the city council, and a Sheriff, a high-ranking official who helped keep law and order.

Political Journey

Sir William Thompson first became an MP for the City of London in 1659. In 1660, King Charles II made him a knight in The Hague, which meant he was given the title "Sir."

He was chosen again as an MP for London in 1661 and served until 1679. During this time, he bought a large estate called Osterley Park, which is now in north London.

Family Life

Sir William Thompson passed away in 1681. He was married to Elizabeth, who was the daughter of Samuel Warner. They had a son named Samuel and a daughter. His son, Samuel, also became an alderman in London and was later knighted by King James II.
