William Tyringham facts for kids
Sir William Tyringham (1618–1685) was an English politician. He was a member of the House of Commons, which is like a part of today's Parliament, from 1660 to 1679. He also fought as a Royalist soldier during the English Civil War.
Early Life and the English Civil War
William Tyringham was born in 1618. His father was Sir Thomas Tyringham, from a place called Tyringham in Buckinghamshire. His mother was Frances Gorges.
William went to Exeter College, Oxford when he was 17. He also studied law at Inner Temple in 1637.
When the English Civil War began, William Tyringham joined the King's side, known as the Royalists. He started as a cornet in the army in 1640. By 1643, he was a captain. He later became a colonel in 1646.
After the war, he had to pay fines because he had supported the King. He was arrested a few times because people thought he was still planning things against the government. However, he was usually released quickly.
Political Career
In 1660, William Tyringham was chosen to be a Member of Parliament for Buckinghamshire. This was for a special meeting of Parliament called the Convention Parliament.
He took on many important roles in his local area:
- He became a Justice of the Peace (J.P.) in 1660. A J.P. helps keep law and order.
- He was made a Deputy Lieutenant in 1660. This role involved helping with military and public order in the county.
- He also helped collect taxes as a commissioner for assessment.
In 1661, he was made a Knight of the Bath. This was a special honor given by the King. He was also re-elected as a Member of Parliament for Buckinghamshire in the Cavalier Parliament.
Sir William Tyringham continued to serve in various public roles. He was involved with the Bedford Level, an area of land that was being drained to make it suitable for farming. He held positions like bailiff and conservator for this project. From 1668 to 1685, he was a gentleman of the privy chamber, which meant he was an attendant to the King.
Family and Later Life
Sir William Tyringham was married twice. His first wife was Elizabeth Winchcombe. They had two daughters together.
Later, he married Sarah Martin by 1655. They also had a daughter. Sarah passed away in 1679.
Sir William Tyringham died when he was about 66 years old. He was buried in Tyringham on August 6, 1685.
