William Villiers, 2nd Earl of Jersey facts for kids
William Villiers, 2nd Earl of Jersey (born around 1682, died July 13, 1721) was an important English nobleman and politician. From 1697 to 1711, he was known as Viscount Villiers. He belonged to the famous Villiers family.
About William Villiers
William Villiers was the son of Edward Villiers, 1st Earl of Jersey, who was the first Earl of Jersey. His mother was Barbara Chiffinch.
From 1705 to 1708, William was a member of the British House of Commons. He represented the area of Kent in Parliament. In 1711, when his father passed away, William became the 2nd Earl of Jersey. This meant he inherited his father's title and responsibilities.
A Journey to Italy
In 1703, William Villiers went on a special trip called the Grand Tour. This was a long journey across Europe, especially Italy. Young noblemen often took this trip to learn about art, culture, and history.
During his tour, William asked a famous Italian artist named Massimiliano Soldani Benzi to create a bronze medal for him.
His Family Life
On March 22, 1704, William Villiers married Judith Herne. She was the daughter of Frederick Herne and Elizabeth Lisle.
William and Judith had three children:
- Barbara Villiers (born August 25, 1706 – died 1761). She married twice. Her first husband was Sir William Blackett, 2nd Baronet. Later, she married Bussy Mansell, 4th Baron Mansell.
- William Villiers, 3rd Earl of Jersey (born March 8, 1707 – died 1769). He later became the 3rd Earl of Jersey.
- Thomas Villiers, 1st Earl of Clarendon (born June 19, 1709 – died 1786). He also became a very important person.
