William Joseph White was born in 1947. He is an American Anglican bishop. A bishop is a leader in some Christian churches. Bishop White served as a main bishop for the Reformed Episcopal Church. This church is part of the larger Anglican Christian family. He led the Diocese of the Southeast.
About William White
William White was born in St. Stephen, South Carolina. He studied at Cummins Theological Seminary. There, he earned a special degree called an M.Div. This degree helps people become church leaders.
Becoming a Bishop
Before becoming a bishop, William White served many churches. He worked as a presbyter, which is like a priest or minister. He was elected to be a suffragan bishop. A suffragan bishop helps the main bishop.
On January 17, 2009, William White became a bishop. This special ceremony is called a consecration. It happened at New Israel Reformed Episcopal Church. Bishop Leonard W. Riches led the ceremony. Other bishops also took part.
Leading the Diocese
In 2015, Bishop White was chosen for a new role. He became a bishop coadjutor. This means he was ready to take over as the main bishop.
On December 12, 2020, he became the eighth main bishop. He took over from Bishop Alphonza Gadsden. Bishop White led the Diocese of the Southeast.
In September 2022, Bishop White decided to retire. After his retirement, Bishop Willie J. Hill Jr. became the new main bishop. This happened at the diocese's yearly meeting, called a synod.
Family Life
William White married Vivian Jenkins in 1970. They had two children who are still living. Sadly, one of their children passed away. Vivian died in 2018. In 2020, Bishop White married Gail Wilson.
