William Willoughby, 11th Baron Willoughby de Eresby (born 1482, died 1526), was an important English nobleman. He held the title of baron, which meant he was a powerful landowner. In fact, he owned the most land in the area of Lincolnshire.

William was the son of Sir Christopher Willoughby and Margaret Jenney. His mother's father was Sir William Jenney, a judge. William became the Baron Willoughby de Eresby in 1499, after his father passed away.

William Willoughby's Family Life

William Willoughby was married two times. His first wife was Mary Hussey. She was the youngest child of Sir William Hussey, who was a very important judge called the Chief Justice of the King's Bench.

Marriage to María de Salinas

On June 5, 1516, William married his second wife, María de Salinas. María was from Spain and was a lady-in-waiting to Catherine of Aragon, who was the queen and wife of King Henry VIII.

As a wedding gift, King Henry VIII gave Grimsthorpe Castle to William's family. This castle became a very important home for them.

William and María had one daughter together named Catherine. When William died, Catherine inherited his title and became the Baroness Willoughby de Eresby.

Catherine's Marriages

Catherine was first planned to marry Henry Brandon. He was the son of Charles Brandon, 1st Duke of Suffolk, and Princess Mary. Princess Mary was the sister of King Henry VIII.

However, Princess Mary died in 1533. After this, when Catherine was only fourteen years old, she quickly married Charles Brandon, the Duke of Suffolk. He was Henry Brandon's father and much older than Catherine.

Later, in 1546, there were talks that King Henry VIII might want to marry Catherine after she became a widow.

William Willoughby's Passing

William Willoughby, the 11th Baron Willoughby de Eresby, passed away on October 14, 1526. He died at a place called Parham, Suffolk. He was buried a few days later, on October 19, at All Saints Church in Mettingham, Suffolk.
