The William Woodward House is a really old and special house in Taunton, Massachusetts. It was built around the year 1800. This house is a great example of a building style called Federal architecture. It's unique because it has brick walls on its sides. In 1985, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places, which means it's an important historical site!

What Makes This House Special?

The William Woodward House is located on Arlington Street in Taunton. It's east of the city center. The area around it has different kinds of buildings, like small factories, shops, and other homes. Right across the street, there used to be a train station.

House Design and Features

This house has two floors and is made of wood. It has a wide front with five sections. The roof is shaped like a pyramid, called a hip roof. The ends of the house are made of brick, while the other walls have clapboard siding.

The main front door has a fancy roof over it, added around 1870. The corners of the house look like they have special stone blocks, which is a style called quoining. The windows have one pane of glass on the top and one on the bottom. They are placed evenly on the front of the house. There are also chimneys on each side of the house.

A House with a Moving Past

No one knows the exact year the William Woodward House was built. But experts think it was built in the late 1700s or early 1800s. It's a really good example of the Federal style of building from that time.

In 1866, a railroad company called the Old Colony and Newport Railroad bought the house. They used it as a train station for a while. Later, in 1881, a new train station was built nearby. The William Woodward House was originally facing Dean Street. But at some point, it was moved to where it stands today on Arlington Street!
