William Young (born January 1, 1876 – died August 27, 1916) was a brave soldier from Scotland. He received the Victoria Cross, which is the highest award for bravery in the face of the enemy. This special medal is given to soldiers from the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth countries.

William Young was born in Glasgow, Scotland. He joined the British Army when World War I began in 1914. He served as a Private in the 8th Battalion of The East Lancashire Regiment.

What Happened on December 22, 1915?
On December 22, 1915, Private Young was in his trench. He saw one of his sergeants lying wounded. The sergeant was in a very dangerous spot, right in front of the enemy's wire.
How Did Private Young Show Bravery?
Without waiting for orders, Private Young decided to help. He climbed out of his trench. He did not worry about the enemy's bullets. He went to rescue his sergeant.
Facing Danger to Help a Friend
As he went, Private Young was hit by two bullets. One bullet hurt his jaw badly. The other bullet hit his chest. Even with these serious injuries, he kept going. Another soldier came to help him. Together, they brought the wounded sergeant back to safety.
After the Rescue
After the rescue, Private Young walked to a nearby medical station. He needed to get his injuries treated. He spent the next four months recovering in the hospital. Sadly, he passed away in August 1916 during surgery for his injuries.
