William de Monte Alto facts for kids
Sir William de Monte Alto was a Scottish noble who lived a long time ago, from the late 1200s to the early 1300s. He was also known as William de Mohaut. He played a part in the important Wars of Scottish Independence.

A Time of Change in Scotland
In 1296, William de Monte Alto promised loyalty to King Edward I of England. His name was even on an important document called the Ragman Roll. This document listed many Scottish nobles who had sworn loyalty to the English king at that time.
Protecting Cromarty Castle
William was in charge of Cromarty Castle for Scotland. He acted as the castle's manager, known as a Constable. He was also the local law enforcer, called a sheriff. He held this important role from 1297 until 1304. In 1304, he had to give the castle over to the English forces.
Changing Sides
After giving up the castle, William again promised loyalty to King Edward I in 1304. By 1305, he was given back his family's right to be the Sheriff of Cromarty. However, it seems he later joined forces with Robert the Bruce in 1306. Robert the Bruce became King of Scots.
A Famous Document
William de Monte Alto was one of the people who signed the Declaration of Arbroath in 1320. This was a very important letter sent to the Pope. It declared that Scotland was an independent country. It also stated that the Scottish people would fight for their freedom.
His Final Battle
Sir William de Monte Alto died in 1327. He was fighting during a Scottish attack on Norham Castle. After his death, his son, also named William, took over his family's position.
