A Look Back at Williams Center's History

Williams Center has an interesting past! It was first named "Centre." This name was chosen in 1836 because the community was close to the very center of Williams County. Back then, the county was a bit bigger than it is today.

Early Days and the Post Office

A post office opened in Williams Center in 1839. This was a big deal because it helped people send and receive letters. The post office served the community for many years before closing in 1903.

Two Churches, One Community

Even though Williams Center is a small place, it has two different Methodist churches! Before 1968, these churches were part of different groups. One church, now called "Asbury," was part of The Methodist Church. The other, now called "Calvary," belonged to the Evangelical United Brethren Church.

The Calvary church group started in 1842. Their first church building burned down in 1947. But they didn't give up! They found an old Lutheran church building that wasn't being used. They then moved this entire building to Williams Center to become their new church. This shows how dedicated the community was!
