Willie J. Taylor is a former American basketball player. He played college basketball for the LeMoyne–Owen Magicians. He was chosen by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 1969 NBA draft.
Willie Taylor's Basketball Journey
Willie Taylor played basketball in high school at Henry High School in Byhalia, Mississippi. He then played college basketball for the LeMoyne–Owen Magicians. He was a star center from 1965 to 1969. In his final year, he scored about 18 points and grabbed 18 rebounds per game.
In the 1969 NBA draft, the Philadelphia 76ers picked Willie Taylor. He was the 28th player chosen overall. A scout for the 76ers saw him play very well in a college tournament. In one game, he scored 25 points and got 22 rebounds. The 76ers coach thought Willie could be a big surprise in the draft. Willie signed a contract with the 76ers in June 1969. He played in two practice games. However, he was later released by the team in September 1969. This happened just before the 1969–70 NBA season began.
Willie Taylor's Life After Basketball
After his basketball career, Willie Taylor became a reverend. He had three children with his wife, Cassie. They were married for 44 years. Cassie passed away in 2014.
