Wilson Moreira (born December 12, 1936 – died September 6, 2018) was a famous Brazilian sambista. A sambista is a musician who plays or composes samba music. He was known for his amazing songs and partnerships with other artists.

Wilson Moreira's Life Story

Wilson Moreira was born in Realengo, a neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. When he was a teenager, he joined a samba school called Mocidade. Samba schools are like clubs where people learn, practice, and perform samba music and dance. They often compete in big parades.

Wilson was very talented. He won two important samba-enredo contests in 1962 and 1963. A samba-enredo is a special samba song created for a samba school's parade theme. In 1968, Wilson joined another well-known samba school, Portela.

Working with Nei Lopes

Wilson Moreira worked a lot with another great sambista named Nei Lopes. They wrote many popular songs together. One of their most famous songs was "Senhora Liberdade" (Lady Liberty). This song became very important during a time in Brazil called the Diretas movement in the 1980s. This movement was when many people wanted to vote directly for their country's president.

Some other popular songs by Wilson and Nei Lopes include "Gotas de Veneno" and "Sandália Amarela". They also wrote "Candongueiro," which showed their strong connection to African roots and culture. Wilson also wrote successful songs by himself, like "Meu Apelo."

Wilson Moreira passed away on September 6, 2018, when he was 81 years old. He left behind a rich legacy of samba music that continues to inspire many.
