About the Goodspeed Memorial Library
The library building is a single-story building. It is built from tan brick. The style is called Classical Revival. This means it looks like old Greek or Roman buildings. The building has a T-shape. It stands overlooking Main Street. You can see it across Wilson Stream.
What the Building Looks Like
The front of the building has three sections. The middle section sticks out a bit. This is where the main entrance is. Brick pillars frame the entrance. There are also slender columns on each side. These columns hold up a decorative top part. This top part has a cool half-round window. The roofline has a fancy edge. A low wall sits on top of the roof.
Inside the Library
Inside, the building has beautiful wooden details. The entry hall has rich wood panels. A colorful stained glass window is in the middle section. Reading rooms are on both sides of the main hall. These rooms are great places to read books.
How the Library Started
The Wilton Free Public Library began in 1901. Town residents asked for it. At first, it was in a downtown shop. In 1914, Agnes I. Goodspeed left money for a new building. Her sons also gave more money. This helped build the library. The new building opened in October 1916. It was one of the last projects by architect Harry S. Coombs. He was from Lewiston, Maine.
