Windows 9x facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Windows 9x is a name for a group of computer operating systems made by Microsoft. These systems were released between 1995 and 2000. Think of an operating system as the main program that makes your computer work, like Windows 10 or macOS today.

The Windows 9x systems were built on a core program called the Windows 95 kernel and an older system called MS-DOS. Over time, these parts were updated in newer versions. This group includes popular versions like Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows ME.

Sometimes, people just say "Windows 9x" to mean all of them, including Windows ME. Other times, they say "Windows 9x/ME" to be more specific. Microsoft stopped providing official support for Windows 9x systems a while ago. Support for Windows 95 ended on December 31, 2001. For Windows 98 and Windows ME, support ended on July 11, 2006. This means Microsoft no longer released updates or helped with problems for these older systems.
