Wingate is a small community in Runnels County, Texas, United States. It's not a city with its own government, but a place where people live together. In 1990, about 216 people lived there. By 2000, the population was around 132, and in 2020, about 83 people lived in Wingate.

Where is Wingate?

Wingate is located in the northwestern part of Runnels County, Texas. You can find it along a road called FM 53. It's about 13 miles northwest of a town called Winters and about 54 miles southwest of a bigger city named Abilene.

Wingate's Weather

Wingate has a type of weather called a humid subtropical climate. This means it usually has hot, humid summers and mild winters.

The hottest temperature ever recorded in Wingate was a very warm 110°F (43.3°C). This happened twice, once on May 24, 2000, and again on May 29, 2011. The coldest temperature recorded was -6°F (-21.1°C) on February 16, 2021.

A Look at Wingate's History

Wingate was first settled by several pioneer families in the early 1890s. A school opened its doors in 1891, and a post office was set up on March 14, 1892. The community was named after W.J. Wingate, a lawyer from Ballinger.

By the 1920s, Wingate had a bank and several other businesses. A new high school was also built around this time. In 1940, about 250 people lived in Wingate.

Later, in 1961, a man named Vester Parrish started a small business raising buffalo. In 1990, Wingate's population was just over 200 people. On July 1, 1991, the Wingate school district joined with the Winters ISD. By the year 2000, about 132 people were living in Wingate.

Wingate still has a post office today, and its zip code is 79566.
