Winneberg is located right on the famous Mississippi River. You can find it at the very southern tip of Calhoun County. This area is known for its beautiful river views.
Winneberg's Past: A Busy Town
Long ago, in the early 1900s, Winneberg was a busy little town. It had many houses and even its own school. A big part of the town's life was a stone quarry. A quarry is a place where people dig out stone or sand from the ground.
Why the Town Changed
When the quarry closed down, many people who lived in Winneberg lost their jobs. Because of this, most residents moved away to find work elsewhere. The town slowly became empty and fell into disrepair. It was no longer the busy place it once was.
Winneberg Today: A New Beginning
In the early 2000s, a new chapter began for Winneberg. A developer bought the land where the old town used to be. They started building new homes there. This new neighborhood was given the same name as the historic town: Winneberg. So, while the old town is gone, its name lives on in this new community.
