The Winona and St. Peter Engine House is an old building in Winona, Minnesota. It used to be a special garage for train engines. It was built around 1890 by the Winona and St. Peter Railroad. This railroad was part of a bigger company called the Chicago and North Western Transportation Company.
This building is important because it's the only one left from a large train repair area. This repair area was a big employer in Winona. It also helped the city's economy grow by being a key part of the railroad system. Because of its history, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. This means it's a special place worth protecting.
What Was the Engine House Used For?
A Busy Train Repair Shop
For many years, the Winona and St. Peter Engine House was a busy place. Workers here fixed and maintained train engines. It was a central spot for keeping the trains running smoothly. This helped move goods and people across the region.
From Trains to Storage
The building stopped being a train repair shop in 1965. This happened when the Chicago and North Western company moved its train maintenance work out of Winona. Since then, the building has been used as a large storage space. Today, the Fastenal company uses it as a warehouse.
