Winslow, Pennsylvania facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Winslow is a small, unincorporated community located in Jefferson County, in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. An unincorporated community is a place that doesn't have its own local government, like a city or town. Instead, it's usually part of a larger county.

History of Winslow

The area now known as Winslow has a simple but interesting history, especially regarding its post office.

Early Days and the Post Office

In 1869, a post office was first opened here. It was originally named Hudson. This was an important step for the community, as post offices were vital for sending and receiving letters and packages. They connected people to the outside world.

Name Change to Winslow

Years later, in 1888, the name of the post office was officially changed from Hudson to Winslow. This new name honored Augustus G. Winslow, who was the very first postmaster for the community. A postmaster is the person in charge of a post office.

Post Office Closure

The Winslow post office served the community for many years. However, like many small post offices in rural areas, it eventually closed down. This happened in 1923. Even though the post office is gone, the name Winslow remains for this quiet Pennsylvania community.
