What is Winspit?
Winspit used to be a very busy place where people dug out stone from the ground. This stone was then sent to London to help build many of the city's buildings. The quarry was active until about 1940.
Winspit During World War II
During World War II, Winspit had a different job. It was used by the military to help defend the area. It became a site for naval (navy) and air defences, protecting the coast.
After the War: A Place for Visitors
After World War II ended, the caves at Winspit were opened up for people to visit. It became a less well-known place for tourists to explore. However, for safety reasons and to protect bats that live there, many of the caves have recently been closed off to the public.
